The role
Our MEICA team (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation) is a small, specialised group of mechanical and electrical engineers. They design, plan and maintain the mechanical and electrical aspects of flood defences throughout the country, from the iconic Thames Barrier, to pump stations, locks, weirs, and many other installations across a variety of urban and rural locations. Our MEICA assets, which range from 1940s pumping equipment to the most up to date PLC systems, have a very important role in the protection of people, property and the environment. In addition, we take care of our employees, offering an impressive career average pension scheme and 27 days’ holiday. We also have flexitime working options in place, so you’ll work 37 hours per week with core hours of 10am and 3pm. Further benefits include a highly competitive rewards package and a lease car.

Variety is a fitting word for the team, so is responsibility. Their portfolio of projects is diverse, high profile and hugely exciting, ranging from large capital schemes to prevent towns from flooding, down to defining maintenance specifications for river weir sites and the strategic management of a huge number of flood risk management structures across the region. Working on these projects from start to finish, they help to keep people and properties safe every single day.

Joining our friendly and extremely important MEICA team, you’ll bring your skills and expertise to these high profile projects, acting as a technical adviser on all MEICA activity as well as participating in our response to flood incidents. Valued as an integral asset to successful project delivery you’ll help us to identify and solve design, operational and strategic issues in conjunction with consultants and end users. Colleagues will look to you for in-depth and up-to-the-minute advice and guidance. Managing contractors, visiting sites, and evaluating designs – you’ll be at the heart of the action from start to finish; overseeing our mechanical and electrical activities, design and ensuring that that all MEICA work complies with standards and requirements. It’s about the bigger picture, everything you do will have a real impact on people’s lives – and that’s incredibly rewarding.

About you
First and foremost, you must be qualified in one of the MEICA (Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation) subjects ideally to HND level or above (or you should be able to show equivalent knowledge and experience). You may be working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status but this isn’t essential, as we’ll support you financially and professionally if this is something you’re interested in. Along with a methodical, intelligent approach to problem-solving, you’ll be confident managing contractors, budgets and projects and able to work remotely and independently as part of a dispersed team, managing a complex and dynamic workload. You should also have the ability to compile reports and conduct audits. You’re someone who thrives on challenge and shares our high standards. With a wealth of relevant experience, you’re likely to be looking for a place you can make a big impact to key projects – and you’ve come to the right place.

A full UK driving licence is essential as you’ll often need to travel to offices and remote field locations throughout the region.
